the History of Montelupo

1. Ancient History

As far back as the Etruscan period, this area was covered by a widespread network of settlements, distributed around the countryside. The Roman settlement, preferring to gravitate towards the economic and administrative centres in the bottom of the valley, left this network intact, where a specialized agriculture developed, namely the cultivation of vines.

The first evidence of habitation in the area of Montelupo during the classical period is that of traces of Etruscan tombs, which can be dated back to the fourth and third centuries B.C., these having come to light recently in the area around the castle.

Regarding other significant presences, such as the huge Roman building of the late Roman Republic period, situated in the vicinity of the Virginio estate, there will be ample documentation and references in the section dedicated to the excavations carried out by the Museum.    »»
